The mortar simulator combines the forward
observer simulator with strap on hardware, that allows for
complete mortar training. The observer sits in front of a big
screen using the tools at his disposal (binoculars, laser range
finder, GPS and compass) to give radio feedback to a mortar crew
that can be 500 meters away.
The mortar setup uses special training rounds, that read nose
fuse settings, as well as number of charges. We currently have
HE, smoke and illumination rounds. When a round is dropped in a
mortar, that information, together with the bearing and
elevation is sent to the computer, that calculates the flight
path, and displays the effect to the observer.
The instructor has full control over the simulation via a
separate notebook, and can set up scenarios or modify them in
real time to suite the training requirements. The whole exercise
as well as all radio communication is recorded and available
afterwards for debriefing.
